Depression is an issue that affects millions of Americans of all ages. It is a disease that doesn’t discriminate and can have disastrous effects for those who don’t seek treatment. Unfortunately, many of the medications typically prescribed for this condition have serious side effects. Thankfully, studies are revealing acupuncture for depression and anxiety in New Rochelle or the surrounding areas can have beneficial results for those suffering from depression.

A U.K. Study

Relax with acupuncture for depression.
Acupuncture for depression can help you relax.

Hugh MacPherson of the University of York completed a study of 755 individuals who were diagnosed with moderate to severe depression. These individuals were split into three groups: on group received 12 weekly acupuncture treatments, the second received weekly counseling and the third group went on with their current care plan. About 70 percent of these individuals took their usual depression medication, while 50 percent reported taking pain medication. After three months, the acupuncture group reported the greatest decrease in symptoms, while the counseling group improved a smaller amount. Improvements continued for at least three months after treatments were stopped.

The First Western Study

Reduce your symptoms with acupuncture for depression and anxiety.
Acupuncture for depression and anxiety can help with symptoms.

A psychologist from the University of Arizona in Tucson by the name of John Allen and an acupuncturist named Rosa Schnyer conducted the first study on the impact of acupuncture on depression in the Western Hemisphere. In this study, a group of 34 females diagnosed with depression were split into three groups for treatment over eight weeks. One group received acupuncture for depression; one group underwent general acupuncture; and the third group was placed on an acupuncture waiting list with no treatment provided. Over the course of the study, patients in the first group reported a significant decrease in their symptoms. However, about half of the participants overall no longer qualified for a DSM-IV depression diagnosis.

These and other studies have identified acupuncture for depression and anxiety in New Rochelle as a viable option for successful treatment. With the large number of individuals who suffer from depression, the news that acupuncture treatment can be beneficial is invaluable. While some studies indicate this treatment is best used in conjunction with medication, it’s still a big step in the right direction.
